There's a reason (or three) I don't wear this little sweater that often, and when I do feel demure, I don't feel that way long. I thought about wearing some girly pumps, but after a couple of tries decided on my slightly military-looking black chap boots instead.
That's better.
But the best part of this mixed feminine-masculine outfit is that it works with my mixed metal rose-gold and silver watch.
It's by Rotary, and one of my collection of automatic skeleton watches. I don't often bother to show the details, but I wear them all the time and this one is especially pretty.
Hard to get the rose gold just the right color here, but you get the idea. I love to see the workings move when I check the time.
I wear it with this little rose gold and silver ring with wee-tiny pavé diamonds. I wore my original engagement ring out long ago and just have never had the stones reset. So I often wear some other delicate little ring in it's place. This one is a favorite. It's a better photo to show the color of the rose gold of the watch, too.
Feminine-masculine is an old style option, but the rose gold-silver combination feels fresh and interesting to me. Even though the outfit is not that big a whoop, the accessories are what made it fun to wear.

Pausing amid the pre-holiday crazies to stop over at the Always Lovely Patti's Visible Monday ... come over and see what the Grown-Up Glamourati are wearing!
I think you had just the right mix. When I saw the first photo of the sweater only, I thought, 'That does NOT look like her.' But then when I saw the complete outfit in the second photo, it all came together and it was demure "with a kick". The boots and the pants pull it off. You look FAB!
ReplyDeleteI def like the sweater with the black boots!
ReplyDeleteLove that watch, Jan. Looks very pretty with the sweater.
ReplyDeleteI adore rose gold! I have one necklace, the kind with a clear locket with charms inside. I'm definitely going to check into Rotary watches... yours is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI completely see your point about wanting to "naughty" up those pretty but demure pastels. Love it!
I always love a good mix of feminine pieces with edgier pieces. Great balance here!

I really like the demure colour and look on you! You look very pretty! The watch and ring are rather lovely too. I don't actually wear my engagement ring, I find it too annoying!x
ReplyDeleteLike you, I don't wear much pink, but this look really works! I tend to combine it with black too, as it seems give it that edge. And the watch is stunning! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this look as I'm almost wearing the same thing, but your look has that chic style and I'm sort of looking more ready for the weekend probably because I'm counting the days until my 2 wk vacation! Three more days to go!!
ReplyDeleteMonica, www.pear-shaped-gal.com
Oh yes, this is what I like (Sue already told you haha): tension: pink and black, militairy with girly. Well done. You say the outfit is not big a whoop but it is really nice and gives the stage to that beautiful watch and ring. I am a watch person and immediately googled this brand which I don't know. Lovely things.... (I tied myself to the chair and folded my hands underneath my bum.. no internet ordering anymore. My husband still wants to know what is in that parcel which came today.)
ReplyDeleteAnd the pink suits your hair very well.
Greetje
You look lovely Jan! Such a soft, pretty shade and perfect as you've worn it over a longer shirt with tails. Looks chic paired with black and boots. It's a good idea to wear things that haven't had a turn to go out for a while. :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a happy week!

Nice combination of feminine/masculine. I happened to have a cardigan in exactly same shade. The colour is lovely, makes one look fresher and younger. But I don't wear it that often. Maybe because I don't have such great accessories to go with it as you do :)
ReplyDeleteLooove that watch! I want one now! I also have changed my wedding rings to one silver band that feels more me. I'm so happy my last post gave you joy. That is why we do it...to maybe turn someone's day around. Thanks for letting me know! xo JJ
ReplyDeleteI actually said "yea" out loud when you wrote you decided on military looking black boots and then saw the pix. Cool and sassy. Not to mention the jewels. I used to have a penchant for moon phase watches. Does that count? Now which coat will you wear with it? There's so many that would look groovy...
ReplyDeleteHi my dear!! Sorry I've been AWOL for such a while! Your outfit is fab, I love the pretty Pastel pink funked up with the black you look amazing and your haircut is just gorgeous! Thanks for stopping by and I wish you and you family a happy Christmas xxx
ReplyDeleteYou - demure? ;-)
ReplyDeleteI like the sweater, actually. I think it looks fresh and is a welcome relief from somber cold weather neutrals. The rose gold I love and always have. My own engagement ring is also tucked away waiting to be reset so I wear substitutes. It's a badge of matrimonial longevity, isn't it?
In case it gets crazy between now and then let me wish you a Joyous Yule now!

Jan, are you a watch collector? Me too! I really love the soft pink on you, it's a great color on you and compliments your hair. I think the fact that you paired it with black pants and boots gives it just that extra unique edge. The rose gold ring is lovely.

Your rose gold jewelry is so chic! I am always been a silver lover person, but recently I am attracted by rose gold...
ReplyDeleteThe sweater really suits you both in colour and shape! It goes welll with black...
This is one of my favorite combinations for winter. A shirt layered under a sweater. The rosa of the sweater is lovely, but I am still shying away from that color for myself. Your wanting to be demure is probably akin to me wanting to be all elegant and dolled up. It happens. But it's more of a bug ;-) You are still looking great and sassy :) And the watch is very cool, almost steampunk like with the visible workings.
ReplyDeleteAlex - Funky Jungle
The soft pink sweater and the gorgeous jewellery are lovely - but demure? You? You're not fooling me for a minute, Jan! I reckon you can swear like a navvy and drink me under the table - consider that a challenge, my dear! xxxx
ReplyDeletePretty soft pink is a hard colour to wear and not feel too try hard girlie but with your black pants and boots , you have got it right. I really like your rose gold watch and ring, quite the stunner. Enjoy your Christmas, Jan, hope it is not too frantic.
ReplyDeleteJan you look fab, I adore the soft hues of the Pink top! Great styling!
ReplyDeletePretty in pink! Just dropping by to wish you Merry X'mas and a great new year ahead!
ReplyDeleteWell Miss Grown-Up Glamourati, you do demure very well. The pink looks fabulous with your hair and skin color (I would be tempted to wear it daily). I'm absolutely loving your take on the feminine/masculine style from the boots, which work wonderfully, to your silver and rose-gold combo.
ReplyDeleteLately I've been drawn to the rose gold myself. Looking forward to seeing more of this from you.
Awwwh, thanks, Shani! Not a flattering sweater, but some sweaters are made to wear no matter how they look on you. Sweaters are huggy, and by nature affectionate ... I've always thought I shouldn't expect as much of a sweater as I do of a dress, or a well fitted pair of trousers. It just needed to go out and about.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
Thank you, Becky! Happy to hear you say so!
ReplyDeleteI love that watches are still around. I know I'm old when I start talking about "the younger generation" and there are so many of them now! They're used to their phones to keep the time, but watches still seem to function as useful jewlery for men and women!
ReplyDeleteSo happy you like it, Liza. Thank you.
Pink sweaters are a weakness ... much like the pink coat. Not a great thing for me, but a twisty kind of adolescent moment whenever I wear one. I now understand, in kind of a scary way, why old ladies love pink. Glad you thought I made it badass, even a bit!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Rose gold is pretty, isn't it? The Rotary was a find ... I don't see many of them where I shop, and it was deeply discounted. I hope to see more! Not sure naughty was where I was headed, but glad you like it. More badass ... but that's a big challenge if you're wearing pink anywhere but on your hair!
ReplyDeleteHey, Alice! Thank you ... I was low on inspiration that day, so I'm glad you liked what I managed to figure out.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kezzie ... I get why a ring might bother you, in your daily doings. Does it flop back and forth? Glad you enjoyed you visit here!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Laurie! Besides my beloved pink coat, I don't wear it a lot either, at least in pastels. I'm much more often dressed in tertiary colors ... I like them all mixed, rich and or subdued by other colors. So happy you liked my watch, too. It is pretty, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sue ... happy you liked what I did. Contrasting narratives was about all I could come up with conceptually! An old trick, but often still effective.
ReplyDeleteI wan't much inspired, and sometimes just like to dress on autopilot. I've also been wearing my favorite things much more often because it makes me happy, but it's not very interesting for blogs. Then again, my blog is not really about the pictures anyway, is it?
I admit to having a better collection of watches than quality wardrobe. Many of mine have "skeleton" works, and they are often pretty.
I'm always pleased if I can make up an outfit that looks anything like what you'd wear. Thank you very much! So happy you stopped by, and hope you are enjoying your vacation!
ReplyDeleteHello, Darling Greetje! Glad you liked my attempt to pull an outfit together. Plenty of stuff to put together, just low on inspiration. Glad to be tired from a pretty good night at the restaurant! An old trick, but a good one; hard-soft, light-dark, and perhaps a different narrative.
ReplyDeleteWatch people are like dog people ... easier to relate to people who like them! Of course you're a watch-woman! I almost never see Rotary watches here, and more rarely on deep discount, 'cause they tend to be pricey. This is one of my favorites ... has all the elements I like. I often wear it with very casual outfits for instant polish. I always need that!
Carmen! Have you finished celebrating your birthday yet? Hope you had a great one! Glad you liked my impromptu outfit on an uninspired day ... and I really do believe in fairness about who gets to go out and about and when and how often! Shows them I care!
ReplyDeleteI like the rosé colour, the darker silver in the middle, the gold stripes on the face, the middle bit. Hard to explain really why I like it. What are the elements you like about a watch? I want elegance, simplicity and the air of expensive.
ReplyDeleteThat's very nice, Janise! Glad you thought my uninspired outfit flattered! It was a lazy-tired day and it was an effort just to get dressed. Nice to have choices on a day like that.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you dropped by!
Hello, Olga! Glad you liked my efforts! Pink is more challenging for grown ups, I think ... it's so loaded with narrative, and women sometimes shy away from the "pink-girly-ultra feminine" story it tells. Glad you like the watch and ring ... I sometimes choose a whole outfit around them!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for all!
Like everything else I really love, I like a strong narrative! There's something 19th century about the workings showing ... steampunky ... and I like it mixed with modern design. I have a lot of this style of watch with leather bands.
ReplyDeleteLast year, Pulsar made a watch that's a lot like a classic Cartier tank in gold and silver tone metals ... decent and consistent quality, very understated and inexpensive. I'll never have the Cartier, but I can have a bit of the design history and art-deco period style. Here's the gold one;
http://www.pulsarwatchesusa.com/watch/ph7330/
And I like a watch that fits close. Not as annoying as a bangle, but still bracelet like. A watch just says that you are paying attention to things and that you might care about life's little civilities, like punctuality. I HATE showing up late!
Hey, Jack! Dan and I had little gold knotwork bands from Scotland when we got hitched ... very special for us. A few months later, we opened our restaurant, here, and he lost about 40 pounds in a short time. His ring fell off, somewhere in the restaurant, and we've never found it! And we have torn the place apart. So he wears a little silver version, and it functions.
ReplyDeleteI'm cavalier about what I mix with my wedding bands as I LOVE rings. Dan, the great traditionalist (NOT!) gets huffy about that, but I just give him the side-eye followed by the upward roll, and he gives up with not too much fuss. As he should.
Thanks for liking my watch. It's a favorite!
OOoh! Moon-phases! I have a number of them, too. You know me ... I like a good story, and these 19th century themes with modern technology really appeal to me.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have to wear a coat that day, but would have worn my black overcoat ...the pink would have been WAY too much!
I miss you at Visible Mondays! Please come back when you feel like it! Thank you for such nice comments, Sharon! I return your wishes for a Merry Christmas to you and yours!
ReplyDeleteYeah, well. I can still behave for 5-6 minutes at a time. But no, demure isn't a natural state for me ... you have me just right. And yes, isn't rose gold pretty? Very early 20th century looking, to my eye, and I love it in modern contexts. So true about our worn out rings ... Dan is a little huffy about what I add to my wedding rings for fun and effect. But I don't see him rushing out to get my garnets reset, either.
ReplyDeleteThank you, kiddo ... enjoy your holidays, too, with all your furry kids and your honey. Hope Clint is feeling better and that you haven't come down with it! Blow kisses his way, and use tongs to pick up his tissues and water-glasses!
Oh, yes ... way too many watches! I'm pleased with the longevity the men's-watch-for-women style has had! It's a family thing ... I have and still wear lots of pocket watches from my Dad and his. Glad you liked the pink. It's a color with a problematic narrative for contemporary women, isn't it? Happy to see it back, but it needs a "handle with care" label. Can't be looking like Social-Security Barbie, can I?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for reading and your nice comments!
Hello, Dan! Buon Natale! Thank you for your nice comments, and I'm so glad you stopped by! I have always just worn what appealed to me, and I have lots of silver, but gold probably looks better. I love the rose gold a lot, and it's hard to afford these days! I can always wear faux rose gold, and alloys are so much better these days ... not just pot metal!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dawn Lucy! So happy you liked my uninspired outfit ... I was feeling extra lazy. Nice to have some things just to pull and wear. And, of course, jewels polish even the dullest out fit, so out they came. Slacker-styling!
ReplyDeleteHave EXCELLENT holidays, kid!
Yup .. pink is touchy, both in how various shades work, and the girly-super feminine narrative the color puts out. Dangerous for old ladies ... don't want to look like Backwoods Senior-Citizen Barbie, do I ?
ReplyDeleteGlad you like what I do about the watch ... I have a lot of these with the working "skeleton" showing. As you see, steampunk ... a favorite genre. I love 19th century stories told with modern technology. Much better for rewriting women's history as it should have been!
Thanks, adorable Alex ... you and your fellows have a WONDERFUL holiday!
Hello, Curtise! No, never fooling your spot-on BS meter. I can swear volubly and accurately, but I'm a light weight drinker. Two decent sized glasses of red wine and I'm augmented like a bad guitarist pumped through a very big speaker! Not so much loud as emphatic. I shall make a point of showing you in person someday... very drunk very old ladies can be such entertainment, for some establishments, anyway.
ReplyDeleteSure hope you and your bunch had a FABULOUS holiday!
Hey, Jilly! Thank you so much. So glad you think I got it right! I'm so happy to hear from you, always.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nicolene! Was thinking of you the other day ... I learned that our Showtime series "Homeland" is filmed in South Africa! Who knew?
ReplyDeleteSo glad you liked my lazy-day styling ... not much imagination that day, and it turned out better than it probably should have!
Thank you Mrs. C! Hope all of you have a lovely holiday as well ... ours looks like it might shape up to be a pretty good one, too. Glad you are all well and happy!
ReplyDeleteOh, Thanks, Trina! This poor outfit turned out better than it had any right too ... I was uninspired, and was in the mood to just pull out items and put them on and go. Pink is touchy ... I worry that I can slip into Senior Citizen Backwoods Barbie in pink. Slippery slope!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like my watch ... it's one of those I though you might like. Pink gold would suit you to a tee, Trina!
I know you'll all have the loveliest Christmas. Enjoy, and give Par a Christmas smooch on the cheek for me!
I could join you two... I am quite funny when I am drunk (after two glasses)😊
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact: two bubbly glasses before Christmas dinner today had me roaring with laughter (head on the table). Trying to get sober now. ...
Greetje
Oh how I love rose gold. I am in the market for some nice pieces as well and your watch is so pretty! That view inside is awesome!! The ring is very nice as well, just a little too much bling for my taste, but pretty nice form and color!!
