Weeding the Wardrobe

Finally ... our two weeks of spring seem to have arrived. I think I missed the first week of it somehow, 'cause it's jumped from 50 degrees to 80-ish, and summer is hot on the heels of spring's pink patent leather pumps. And instead of working on this blog post this morning, I found myself pulling things out of the closet, either to store or begin to wear now that it's warmer. I've been performing major wardrobe weeding. I have piles and piles of clothes on our bed. (I can't be bullied or even shamed into anything so punishing as real gardening with the pollen counts as high as they are!)

Beyond moving the seasonal stuff to and fro for best accessibility, I'm going to be ruthless this year about pruning that third category of clothes: things that I should be wearing but won't because they just don't inspire. Or flatter, or fit well and were never loved. Time to send them to consignment and out into the world where I hope they find true love in someone else's closet. No more guilt-tripping myself into keeping one more mistake.

And I'm noting that there are some distinct categories into which my wardrobe rejects fall.

A-line skirts
Universally flattering, or so I'm told. I just don't wear them. And I have some pretty ones, in varying lengths. But not for long. It's a proportion thing that I've never figured out for my shape.

White sleeveless tops
I have obsessed over these for several years now. I've always liked Carolina Herrera's classic look, and white tops with long sleeves seem to work much better for me. I have half a dozen pretty white tops without sleeves, in various shapes, all of which that look like poo on me. It's not upper-arm shame. It's all that white across my chest without long white sleeves for balance. And there's no wearing them with jackets to cut the vast expanse of white across my chest down to size. It's way too hot for jackets, so out they go. This year, I vow to not even try to wear them any more. I feel better already, just by giving up and letting go!

Bat-wing / poncho- cut chiffon blouses
And these seemed like such a good idea.  However, I cannot ignore the fact that, when wearing one, I look like I should be revving up for a rousing night of bingo or an early bedtime after Lawrence Welk re-runs.  These similar styles were everywhere last year, and didn't work well for a lot of us, it seems. Additionally, if they are everywhere here where I live, that can be a wildly waving red flag.

Wide-leg pants
These will work well for consignment because there are women who look good in them, but I am not one. I had fun with these in the 70's and 80's ... but my body was cut differently. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

My Current Crop of Fat Clothes
Most of us have a range of sizes we hang on to for security.  I'm giving up my fat jeans. ( Pity I can't send my fat genes with them.) Accompanying them will be the too-big dresses I saved just because I loved them, and I might gain 10 pounds and have a semi-formal event to attend that requires a several-years-out-of-date cocktail dress. Not happening if I can help it. In fact, there are several departing  items that I purchased during that period after weight loss when you really don't believe you're smaller in girth as well. They will go to taller women, I hope.

*****

The following might well be a Preview of Coming Attractions in more ways than one. I loved my first pair of printed jeans so much (you saw them HERE), I had to have another pair.

Sorry about repeating the coral heels ... I'll wear them out this summer!

What is cool about these is that they are reversible. I would NOT lie to you. They're from Target, and this is what the other side looks like.

They are an absolute two-fer. I'm not nuts about the reverse side print, but it could come in handy on one of those days when ya' just have to wear something different. The vertical-ish pattern is not a bad thing.

And because I liked these so much I bought two additional pair of printed jeans (single-sided, sadly) you will be seeing fairly soon.

This brings up a final category of my personal fashion-fail. The ever-classic What Was I Thinking?! group of cast-offs. I hope my printed jean obsession won't fall into this company.  My guess is that this little style won't last long, so I'm inclined to wear it with grown-up and modest tops and shoes for as long as it's still fun.

And, for now, it's still lots of fun!

Speaking of fun, I'm linking to the very fun Visible Monday and always adorable hostess, Patti.  Join us to show off and out, just a little!

  1. I love those jeans! What a great idea that they are reversible! They look great on you too. Wonderful bold colours.

I *tried* to prune down a couple of things in my wardrobe today...I'm trying to stick by the rule if something new comes in, then something old must go out. Well I did manage to get rid of 2 items...but the third I tried on and still liked. It's the effort that counts right? : )

    1. That's a great rule ... I couldn't live with it, but it's a great rule. But this is the first serious pruning I've done in several years. Lots more closet space now! And of course it's the effort that counts!

Thanks for your kind comments ... I'll be looking for more of these. Only one side has real pockets in back, but how often do you use them! Great idea.

Of course you are going to run right out and clean your closet! I'd bet that your closet is as gracefully arranged and elegantly tidy as the rest of your personal presentation is. Some of the garish color I wear seems to me so gauche next to your subtle and elegant palette, but it's hard not to pick out color!

  3. Really pretty color pairing. I bought the same jeans in the camp/olive green. I just could not pass up a 2-fer either. Can't wait to see how else you style these!

As to my closet - it is a constant nightmare! I am so jealous that you are so thorough and organize about purging your clothes. I just can't get myself to let go.

Please understand ... my closet was in complete chaos, and I've been so ready to put away the winter things! I'm not tidy by nature (that is such an understatement!) so it is just pared down chaos.

So happy you stopped by ... thanks for checking in!

  4. HI Jan,

Well done on letting go of the 'I might need them/gain or lose weight' clothing. I also don't like sleeveless tops on me ... they just never look completely right.

I like your printed jeans ... I've bought red jeans and mint denim capris but have not yet been bold enough to go for printed - I however saw some polka dot jeans and leopard prints that were enticing ...I may take the leap yet and purchase a pair.

Have a fabulous and thanks for visiting.

So glad you stopped by, and will watch your blog with interest!

  5. I think your categories are great and I plan to use them to weed out some more, as well. I NEED sleeves...a-lines aren't really working for me, either...no wide-leg pants for this 5'1" shortie...I'll revisit my two batwing tops...otherwise unfortunately, I'm wearing my fat clothes now - ugh!

Who knows how long printed jeans will be "in"...I usually dont't care, as it's more about how I'm feeling in my clothes...gotta love your reversible Target jeans!

    1. We are often so backwards here in this particular area... it makes me care if things look too dated. It's not important to me to be "in" precisely, but I really want to look like I pay attention to the rest of the world and am part of it. If it starts feeling too dated, I start feeling stuck in the mud.

Thanks for your kind words ... am enjoying your blog a lot!

If you love Level, you should come down to Dubai for a vacation and we'll go shoe sampling as I like to call it :) Congrats on your recent printed jeans, I guess that leaves just me still on the other side.. always a late bloomer myself ;)

Thanks for your very kind words ... it isn't likely that I'll ever be able to take you up on your kind offer, but I'm feeling smug that I know someone a little who does get to see places like the Level. Amazing!

  8. Ah the kindness of an honest assessment- no A-line, bat-wings or white sleeveless. For me it's white shirts in general or the color cream/ivory in a solid. They are so classic and classy yet look horrid on me. I'm an A-line girl but the hem must fall above, not below the knee to work for my Germanic calves. I salute those reversible jeans- and you for knowing what looks good on you and sticking to it.

    1. You're always kind, Bella. Thank you. A-line dresses seem to work if the waist sits where it should, or *looks* like it does ... it's an answer to the inability to tuck ( I'm short-waisted.)
I've seen pics of you legs, and if your calves are Germanic, then that's a good thing. Lucky you, 'cause you always look sleek in short stuff.

  9. Jan, for weeks now I'm weeding my wardrobe, since the warmer days start. Seems it is an endless story. Meanwhile I have got three piles, one which has to be thrown away definitely. One to ponder about and one which has to be ironed. I don't like ironing, so this pile will stay weeks longer.

    1. Went back to Target yesterday for a quick pass and came out empty handed. Managed to spend it at JCP, though, and came home happy.
These reversibles fit comfortably ... it's a little strange tucking in a shirt or cami and have your hands slide into pockets on the inside, though. You're much longer and leaner than I am, so they might not make you as happy. They're low-waited, and I have to cover that at my advanced age and chubby hips, but you'd have to try. They have some in a more discreet palette that you might like. They are a good deal if you like both sides, or even if you LOVE only one!

I've found a weight that's fairly easy to keep for the last five or six years, but it's probably more than actuarial tables like for my height. My schedule is fairly regimented, so I know what I'll be eating most of the time. All bets will be off when I retire, but that looks some time away! You'll be happy to know that as you age, you might like a little fat in the face. The trick is to balance how much you want of that and how much winds up on your ass.

Haven't done my spring/summer changeover in the closet. It just went from 30 to 80 so I wasn't quite ready for it. Your piles of clothes remind me of my designations when I started Project Minima a couple years ago. I pruned away anything that didn't fit, didn't look or feel good on me. But I kept it for fabric and refashioning, moving it all out of the closet and into the studio. Everything's rolled up on shelves there by fabric and color. I even use the zippers and buttons! And I haven't bought any new or thrifted clothes since then (except those darn e-bay shoes). Just happily sewing along.

I have found taking photos of myself for the blog to be invaluable in making these assessments, far more so than just looking in the mirror. I still have a hankering for items/looks that are wonderful on other people, such as that crisp white shirt and the perfect pair of jeans which every list ever compiled of Must Have items for a woman's wardobe includes... 24. That is such a cute colorful outfit Jan! I also do try to not buy too many of the current fashion trends that might not last. However, it is very hard to not buy many items of the current trends, but i try to be good and wear the items I got often instead. However, I keep my fingers crossed that statement necklaces will be ok for many more years! However, my A-line skirts (and almost no skirt) will stay with me until they fall apart, either they are in or out. It actually do surprise me that they don't work for you. But, when you have those lovely pants you seem to need a good A-line skirt?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My problem with A-lines is that they seem to look best with a tucked shirt, and a belt perhaps. I have a very short waist, and they just divide me in the wrong place if I tuck a shirt or top in. A top on the outside seems to be just as bad, as the A line pulls the top away from my body at my widest point, even further than a closely fitted skirt or pants. A dress with a fuller skirt seems to work differently ... it's like a built in, proportional tuck-in! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
You wear your skirts well, by the way. And you layer things so well, too!
Thanks for stopping by and for helping me figure out why I don't like A-lines on myself.

I tried to do a little weeding recently as well. I failed miserably as I only got round to getting rid of 3 short skirts. I'm starting to feel too old and gained too much weight for them. I'll try again soon, when I have the energy to just take everything out of the closet!

    1. Yes, still in stores I think. I'm not sure even thin, young girls look good in very short skirts. They look a little dated to my eye, even on them.
It's been a process that I was glad to get done, sure that summer was coming. Then, last night there was a 30 degree (F) drop and winter is back. But, when summer gets here, I'll be ready!

  30. Too late! Sorry ... consigned to a less than friendly store to which I will not return happily. The skirts would have all been too big for you anyway.
Thank you liking my pants. My ruthless fit has subsided. Distressing, but it's 40 degrees and sopping wet outside and I have to bestir myself to shop for the pub. Much digging into the winter stuff I just put away. Not happy. But will get over it!
    Good to hear from you!

  31. Pruning is such a good idea and it sounds like you've come to decisions that will make your closet a wonderland of pieces that you truly love. I've been working on this for months, and still have more to do. But it helps me feel lighter and it also makes way for the new.

The coral heels are beautiful, so repeat, repeat, repeat. Your printed jeans look so good on you that I think they have become contagious. I'm going to be on the look out, or check in my closet for hidden gems.

    1. It ended up with less crowding, and with things easier to find, but still not a wonderland. Your comment made me consider how I really feel about the clothing I do have. I don't really love much of it, but I like most of it. So that's not too bad, but it's kind of like having lots of aquaintences but no real friends. Hmmmm.
I do feel lighter ... job done but only for the moment, as it should be an ongoing project, shouldn't it?

You have such a lovely sleek figure, anything you decide to wear can so easily made your own! Printed pants? If you want them, then you can surely wear them!

Always such a treat when you stop by! Thank you for your always kind comments.

  32. I love your use of sarcasm to diffuse the guild trips of wardrobe purging (the cocktail dress comment).

  33. Well, darn. I lost my comment due to server issue. So I'll condense my thoughts and just say I can sooo relate to what you're saying about weeding and hanging on reasons....and the reversible jeans are awesome.
Have a great week, Jan. :)
