Are We There Yet?

Never, ever have I heard or said so much about the weather. And in rural areas, one discusses the weather a lot. Northwest Arkansas (some miles north of us, but still ...) had SNOW in early May, for the first time since we began recording weather here in 1819. According to the National Weather Service, records were broken all over the place. Probably where you are, too, either warmer or cooler. Our last two weeks here brought temperatures as high as 81 degrees ( about 27 degrees C ) and as low as 34 degrees ( just over 1 degree C. )

No matter what your opinion is on the broadest ramifications of these changes, their causes or the effects on our long-term survival as a species, you will surely be aware that one of the most practical and pressing issues is woefully unaddressed.

When can I reasonably begin wearing sandals?

Along with last week's spring closet pruning, the shoe closet (my not-cute euphemism for disorderly boxes of shoes I have piled in our extra bedroom) was included in the process. Bad timing. So now, I'm doing a lot of trotting back and forth between shoe-storage areas (a better description) pulling out and putting back shoes that I thought it was safe to store. I've decided to stick to close-toed shoes for most outfits until our weather settles down into some consistent behavior. But I am thinking about new sandals, and we all know anticipation is half the fun.

So, for the nonce ...

Last week I threatened you with more printed pants. Here are some, with transitional jacket, shirt and close-toed heels and big, silly grin. I'll wear these bright pants a lot during the summer, if it ever arrives. And I'm pretty sure their essential casual playfulness will look better with some cute summer sandals. Understand that as I say that, I am fully aware that I will regret wishing for summer when temperatures reach triple digits. But that's part of the effect that just the right shoes can have over a woman's hold on rationality.

Speaking of the right shoes and the appearance of irrationality ... I bought these this weekend, on CLEARANCE, in my very own size, and they are comfortable (yes, they really are !) and they are exactly the shoes I wanted to wear with a specific dress. That never happens to me. You will see more of these fairly soon.

Gold glitter shoes irrational? I think not.

I'm linking up with the always pretty and mostly rational Patti at her Visible Monday gathering, so be sure to stop by and see what everyone is up to!

  1. yummy floral trousers, Jan! It must be summer or darn close. I just bought some (gulp) Birkenstocks, but the *fashionable* ones! for Florida summer. Really, they are rose-red!

Thanks for linking up to Visible Monday in all your fabulous-ness.

    1. Birkies! Rose-red Birkies! You know, I believe you, including the "fashionable" part. Haven't seen Birkies in these new incarnations, but I was almost charmed by some newfangled Crocs that I saw in one of the mags. Pretty heels, real shoes. See? Now we can prove evolution to those nay-sayers. I like it. Looking forward to seeing them!

  2. We didn't get any snow but it's very up and down - and wet - in Music City.
Believe it or not I have all of my shoes in one closet. Okay, so hubby did build in two additional shelves to store them but they're still in one place ;-P
I really love those floral pants on you and those shoes! You know how I love sparkly shoes! I can't wait to see what you pair them with!

    1. Of course you have all your shoes in one closet! No envy here. Nope.
Seriously, good for you and lucky you with a huz who could/would build shelves for you! I am actually in admiration. One of my goals is to make our extra bedroom into a closet. It's already a storage room for all the stuff from the pub costume events (We've done Medieval feasts and do Victorian dinners during Christmas) and my handbags and shoes. There's also a bed in there somewhere. Someday.

Hope your weather is improved ... it looks a bit better today here.
Yup, these are sparklies, and have the perfect dress for them. Had a hard time prying them out of the stock room at JCP, but that's another story for another day.
How's your hand? Hope things are rapidly improving there ...

Bright perhaps. Cheerful? Not so much. Internet here is down everywhere and I'm composing this in word processor in hopes I'll be able to send it soon. I hate living in the middle of nowhere.
Sorry about your weather, as well. I'm not complaining so much about the cool weather as I am worrying out loud about the huge changes generally.
In the meantime ... shoes are still important!

    1. Hey, Becky! Thank you for popping in and the sweet comments. I'm figuring out that it's not the printed skinnies, but how you wear them that keeps them okay for my advanced age. Really, it's just flowers on denim. So if I keep my butt covered and stay away from tube tops and stripper heels, I might be able to pull it off for one more summer!
Yep, lovin' my sparkly Cinderellas. Will show off with dress soon.

    1. Hey, Alexa ... yes, YOU know what I mean by miserable summers. We don't even have a coastline to make it bearable! I'm much less annoyed than I am freaked out by the weather changes. It is always especially important in a farm area ... farmers here have had plenty of rain (Yeayyyyy!) but not enough warm evenings (BOOOOO!) for the hay to be where it should be. And the pollens (which are especially heavy this year as a response to the weather) are making me sneeze and drizzle.
On a better note, I'm looking forward to wearing my shoes and dress soon! Thanks for stopping by and your kind remarks!

There are a couple of reasons, but the most important is that I look washed out with the wrong temperature neutrals near my face. Anybody can do beige bottoms, but nobody does them like you!
So, I fall back on color.
I'm tickled with my glitter pumps and will debut the dress soon ... I'm pleased with it.

The heels are from JCP (big surprise) and on clearance, so check with your local Penny's ASAP if you want to see if they're still available. They're probably not work wear, as you say, but are probably self defining as over the top! With jeans and a sharp shirt and great jewelry? With a dressy-dress for going out? Holiday wear next winter?
I'm lucky, they'll work for me swanning around the restaurant on weekends. Since I do a fair amount of running around as well, it's a good thing I can trot in 4" heels!

My husband was out in your part of the woods most of last week and is now back in Bentonville tonight, he also mentioned how crazy your weather was behaving.
Now for those gold glitter shoes, not irrational at all! You go girl!!! I would definitely be wearing them with my jeans and a white button down or black blouse to dress the jeans up for a funky kind of look. Can't wait to see them on you with the dress.

I laughed at your shoe situation. I'm in a similar situation. It's not been a simple season switch this year. Boxes and clothing all over the bedroom. I'm actually starting to get used to it, which is dangerous. I don't want to be on hoarders. Mind you, they'd open my closets and see nothing but empty space, LOL.

I love your bold colour scheme today Jan! There's something about classic red and black that never goes out of style. Personally, I think the shoes are fabulous with pants, and the pants are fabulous with you! You look fantastic and I love your smile!

Wishing you the great weather you want,
and with thanks for stopping by with your kind comments,
      J

    1. Thank you so much, Lisa. Will probably be able to next time I wear them. It's been 70-80 degress the last few days, and here, that's sandal weather!
I appreciate the visit ... hope all is well in your world.
Looking forward to seeing next Vis Mon!

    1. How kind of you. Thank you. I hope to wear them out this summer, both the loud jeans and the glittery pumps!
I'm a fan of your site as well, and need to stop by to say hello again. I don't and I'm remiss.
I'm glad you stopped for a visit.
      Have a great week,

  37. Boy, am I slow or what? Our weather has been unusually perfect this spring - gorgeous sunny days, just starting to get too hot, but rain is in the forecast (and it's welcome for a day or two).

I'm always dubious when someone says their high heels are comfortable. If you're sitting, I'm sure they are, but I have a low threshold when it comes to comfortable shoes. I would love to wear more heels, but usually regret it.

I love those pants - they look wonderful on you!

    1. So glad you are having lovely weather! I also hope you get all the rain you need ... we need that blend of rain and warm evenings that will make our pasture grow!
Dubious. Well, okay. I'm really not lying to you, and the word *comfortable* may be at issue here. By comfortable, I mean that when I put them on, my toes aren't pinched or rubbed or cramped in the toe box. If I can wiggle the toes, that's comfortable. If the arch support of the shoe fits my foot, that means comfort. Some brands work better than others. And then if the heel of the upper fits mine, I'm usually in business and am comfortable. I think the shape of my foot is an easy fit generally. So when I say a high-heeled shoe is comfortable, that's pretty much what I mean. It's comfortable to me.
But the other part of comfort is in the head. You have to have the desire to wear them, to learn to walk in them, and to take all the flack you get from those that don't. I'm not just petite, I'm short and round. In my opinion, higher heels provide balance in my appearance, and I like the way my legs and backside look in them. I am attentive to the health of my feet and legs, and I spend a lot of my time barefoot or in flat shoes at home.
I understand if others don't wish to wear them, or have difficulties wearing them, or are put off when they see them for personal or political reasons. (I could write a whole post on this, any may do so one of these days!) But I and my tootsies are not lying to you when I say a particular pair are comfortable. All high heels are not created equal.
Glad you like my loud jeans ... that's how I think of them. It seems counter intuitive to put the print on the bottom, but it works better than I thought it might as a style-tactic!
Have a great week! Good to hear from you, Val.

  38. Thank you so much for taking time to comment on my blog. :)
I thought it only fair to pay you a visit too especially after a thoughtful comment rather than the usual "cute" "nice" and other comments of such ilk. ;)
I'm a fan of gold glitter shoes...in fact, make that anything glitter.
And as for the weather...the less said, the better...over here, I still have my central heating on...yes, in mid may. Ugh.

  39. Eee, glittery shoes! Can't wait to see them on your feet :-)

Following your last post, I have stored away deep Winter clothes, brought out summery stuff and. sandals... But am still in woolly jumpers! It is too cold for sandals. Did do a satisfying wardrobe weed though...

  40. I LOVE those pants! You are ricking them! And you're right about the weather! We are having our second day here in Scotland that has actually been like it should be at this time of year. Two warm days. That's all. ANd one of them I missed because we were on vacation. LOL.
