Lessons in Cream and Black ... and Lessons from Dogs and Cats

I mentioned a recent post that I weeded out all my white sleeveless blouses and sent them on to other homes.  Then, of course, while shopping I ran across another one that I just had to have.  On the surface, that might seem like proof of Einstein's definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.  But no.

Lesson learned: Cream is not white.  And cream looks better on me than pure white.  Really good to know.

I love this creamy-white blouse.  I didn't photograph it well, but the very crisp, art-deco style pleating is flattering.  It has pretty white and gold enamel buttons as well.  Happy me.

I've also been seeing the most adorable clutch-purses of all sizes, shapes and colors in magazines and on fellow bloggers.  And like all the lovely women who carry them, they are invariably shown to their best advantage.  There are no unsightly bulges that might be caused by ... ummm ...  actual contents.  You know, the stuff that you need to carry around in them?

Yeah, yeah, I know, you don't need to carry that much.  A credit card, a lipstick, perhaps a key.  Of course.  I believe you.  And you must know how much I envy your organizational skills and minimalist lifestyle.

But I have too much stuff that needs to come with me when I go out and about.  There's only so much downsizing that's useful to me.
I had completely given up on being able to carry a clutch, until I found the one pictured above at TJ Maxx for much less than I though it might cost!

Lesson Learned: There are still soft, oversized clutches being made and available in your price range.  They can hold all your stuff with minimal downsizing of items. You just need to keep the larger size on your radar.

And lest you think I'm showing you an empty clutch for best effect, you should know that, in this photograph, it contains:
my Kindle Fire HD 8.9
card case with ID, cards and cash
hairbrush
Bare Minerals mirrored compact and brush
tiny pencil eyeliner stub
lipstick
phone
Bare Minerals Sunblock
asthma inhaler
sunglasses in hard case

And there's plenty of room to carry the cream-colored Battenburg lace fan, also pictured above.  It's one of my favorite styles of fan, and I have several colors in this style.

***********

Below you'll see a couple of pictures of two of my darling doggies ... and both of them happen to match my outfit, but both have to be left at home in air conditioned comfort this time of year.  And while the lesson below is not a new one for me, it bears mentioning.

Lesson to remember: As much as I love my blouse, fan and bag, they're never going to love me back.  These kids do, and deserve extra consideration during our miserable hot weather.

Here in the photo with me is Bijou, our toy poodle.  Nope, she's not a mix.  Some poodles just have waves instead of curls.  And lots of premature gray and white spots on chin and toes instead of the more glamorous pure black.

And this adorable little girl below is our latest rescue.  Her name is Toutes because when she wags her tail, she wags everything!
She's clearly part Chihuahua, and something else.  Not sure what, but she has some long hair somewhere in her family tree.  So, that makes her Demi-Chihuahua with Long Hair, if not a purebred Long Haired Chihuahua.  That's our story and you're stuck with it.
She's still a young dog ... she just has an unfortunate amount of gray like Bijou.

(Awwwwww....)

Kittehs need special consideration in the summer as well.  Below are "The Evil Twins", Janie and Posh.  They're not identical twins, but herringbone-tabby sisters who are very hard to tell apart.  Janie has green eyes and Posh has eyes that are an astonishing shade of gold-orange.

Lesson Learned: Gray can be Glam!

(And cats do not like to be photographed at nap time. There was retaliation.)

  1. I saw a few fans at an estate sale on Friday, and thought of you. But they weren't elegant enough for you. Like the gorgeous lace fan that matches you new cream blouse, which looks delicious with your black pants, sandals and the clutch large enough to carry everything you need.

Love the photos of your beloved pets. Yes, they are adorable!

    1. I really love these Battenburg fans ... they're modern looking with un-fussy lace, provide a good breeze and are pretty tough and take jamming into a bag well. So happy you thought of me when looking at fans.
Glad you liked the pet photos. They are our family!
I really appreciate your kind remarks, Judith, as always!

  2. Oh my I am in love with your doggies! A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E! You need a pet family portrait since all the greys, blacks and whites would be perfect together.

I do love that clutch but I have to admit as much as I love the look of them I find them totally impractical. I need hands free. Even ones with little chains I like better.

That said I love the classic look of this clutch. And the fact that you can stuff lots of stuff inside.

You and I must have the exact same skin. Cream is much better than white on me any day.

I think it's hilarious you got rid of your old white sleeveless blouses to buy a new one. Some habits are hard to break : )

    1. So much cuteness and so much love for your pets!!!!
The blouse and the clutch are a great find and they look great on you but most important and no matter what Einstein said: if you love you should buy for yourself.
I'm the family "carrier" so usually my purses are pack with stuff, only when I go out on my own can I wear a clutch or a small bag.
Do you suffer from asthma?, because my oldest daughter does and she is always carrying her inhaler,

    2. Thanks, Suzanne. This isn't even half of them ... we have plenty of space and there's always some poor little poo dropped off near the restaurant. They gravitate to the smell of cooking steak and burgers! Some stay, some go to other homes. Toutes ran across in front of the car on a highway ... couldn't let her get squished. She's become my special buddy.

Yup, on this clutch's maiden voyage, I found I missed my left hand, but a tuck under the arm helps. Not second nature yet, and still like my handbags with straps of handles. Nice I know I can punt when I wish to, though!

Good to know that in my freaking 60's I finally figure out how to wear whites! To be fair, cool whites looked better on me when I was younger. Skin has grown a bit sallow, it seems, so the cream is kinder.

Have a great, pain free week. (Actually, I wish you a pain-free forever-after!)

    3. So glad you stopped by, Ofelia! Yes, lots of cute and lots more love.
We never just go out for an hour or so ... it always seems for the whole day, and I just like to have more survival gear with me. First thing, any bag must carry my Kindle Fire!
And yes, I'm asthmatic since childhood, but it is pretty easily controlled since it's always allergy related. I'm also have COPD, but it gives me little trouble in any but allergy season.
I so enjoyed you post showing your museum trip. I miss the city!

  3. Of course you have rescued animals-- I could have guess we have this in common! We have done the same and find them to be the most lovable pets. Your pets look like sweeties just like you!

Enjoy this outfit with this lacy fan. I have some small purses and I've been eyeing some clutches but haven't purchased one yet. In daily life I do need a big bag for many of the things you listed and more.

Loved reading your comments on my post. I have a soft spot for honorable cowboys.

    1. Thank you, Ann. Good that you stopped by! Bijou was a planned puppy ... but we have other rescues like Toutes. It's difficult for pets here in the country, and folks don't always treat them well. The two cats were born in our garage, so they have as much right to stay as we do. If only they could contribute to the utilities!

    1. It seems you have a realistic idea of whom the dog will actually belong to ... the one who feeds, vets and takes them out. It's usually the mom who gets to do that, job and career hours notwithstanding! It's not that men and boys are callous, but they just tend to take the family pet for granted, just like another family member. If you do get one, I recommend a rescue ... they always really appreciate it.
Glad you like my top and fan ... I appreciate you kind remarks and I hope you know you're always welcome here!

  6. Bijou, Toutes, Janie, and Posh! Ah, your pups are girly girls. I'm in love with them. And Janie and Posh are equally adorable. By the way, when is it not nap time for a cat?

    My husband had a t-shirt on yesterday that I had not seen before. He had bought it in Maui last December, and it was the first wear. I commented on how nice and new it looked...deep navy with a little logo on it. The back displaying a bigger print. Shortly after I said that, he picked up Mia and rubbed her all over his t-shirt. He smugly said, 'That's better!' He was, of course, covered in grey fur. {Sigh}

  9. Oh oh oh - furry creatures to adore! I'll talk clothes later but first - your Janie is the very image of my cat Willow, it's uncanny. I just showed the family and they all said it was an amazing resemblance. Tell Janie she has a doppelgänger over here in the UK. She won't care, of course, because cats don't. Your doggies are so beautiful too, look at their little faces! Nothing wrong with some grey streaks, they look distinguished.
So - cream blouse. I am better with cream than white though I wear neither very often. But that blouse is very stylish and you look beautiful. Of course you do.
Everyday clutch bags are just not practical for me, though they look great. They are OK for an evening, and I must say I am impressed with how much you managed to fit in yours. I like something I can sling over my shoulder or arm, I need hands free for gesticulating at all times, I can't talk without my hands. And I am pleased to see your bag obviously has stuff in it - blogger pics with flat clutches make me cross! Where's the stuff?! xxxxx

I've never considered to buy a clutch exactly for same reason - I need to carry many things with me that seem not to fit into it. Now I see that it is possible to find a clutch that is big enough for everything I want to carry with me.

  11. You are so right about cream and white. I coloured by brows white a couple of times and they were just weird. I did them more of a creamy colour and they looked just right. Same with clothes. 1. I've seen flesh toned brow color that I find kind of interesting ... probably not for me any time soon, though. Pale brows seem otherworldly looking, and that's an attractive idea.
You just had to ask. So I had to go look up what the Queen (probably) wags around with her in her Launer bag. " Reading glasses, mint lozenges, a fountain pen and a small mirror and lipstick." She's also said to carry a hook with a suction cup on it so she can hang her purse under the table. Really? No cash, "Except for the ‘precisely folded’ 5 pound or 10 pound note on Sundays, which she donates at church." This from Sally Bedell Smith, her current biographer. Maybe or maybe not a cell phone.
Good to know. I guess ...
Thank you for the compliment about my " children" ... they're way better than kids. You don't have to send them to college but then, they don't support you when you're old, either.

    1. Hey, Tamara!
We've actually had Toutes since Memorial Day weekend. We found her running along a deserted stretch of highway, then dashing across in front of us. She was filthy, very thin, and smelled strongly of wood smoke. She came right to me, so she had family at one point, but she was so far away from everything and was in such bad shape I didn't try to find her origins. Not sure how old she is, but she's still chewing and I don't think she's had a heat yet. I didn't ask the vet and he didn't mention it.
She's wants to rule the world, and does. She's attached to my hip, but is brave and bossy. She and Bijou are just now getting to be buds, and she and Lizzy, our white Chihuahua (also a rescue ... deserted by bug-out renters,) were buds from the first.
Bijou is not a rescue ... I got her for myself for Christmas three years ago, from a local breeder I know. She was the only straight haired baby in the litter, and was the runt as well. Just like me!

  20. Your four legged family members are adorable! I don't know why we are calling these very hot days "dog's days". No dog no cat wants to be outside. Yours luckily having you caring for them.
The creamy white blouse is beautiful. Cream or champaign white is more classy, I think.
Your maxi clutch is also beautiful. For me it would still be too small, because I often take my camera with me and, and, and... you know that.

The heliacal rising "occurs when it first becomes visible above the eastern horizon for a brief moment just before sunrise, after a period of time when it had not been visible."
      Good to know!

I love cream as it is softer especially when I am not suntanned. In summer I wear white as well.

I was laughing about the contents of your bag - I always carry everything I might need one day. Needless to say that I never really need all that stuff ;-)

  36. "There are no unsightly bulges that might be caused by ... ummm ... actual contents. You know, the stuff that you need to carry around in them?" I hear you lady, I hear you!
I could not get by on a clutch - much as I love them. I am bag lady extraordinaire - too much stuff to carry.
    Your pooches are adorable!
Fab cream shirt too - sometimes we do learn from our wardrobe mistakes (that's my excuse for repeatedly making them anyway!)
