Monkey Mind Days

You know those days when your thoughts swing on mental vines from subject to subject? The days when you find yourself standing in another room with no earthly idea why you are there, and it's hard to focus on anything for more than a few minutes? Monkey Mind Days. They happen a lot in the spring. They're a sure sign I need to meditate to clean out the short term memory banks.

Wait, what is that shiny object over there?...

The Monkey Mind was on all day yesterday.

Nowadays, if I'm going to use a drawing in a post, I finish the very time-consuming drawing before I actually do any writing. The following is what the Monkey Mind was coming up with while I was painting the booties.

"I love this outfit. I really love, love, LOVE these flower-dy jeans. They look awful blue grey here. They're really a dark charcoal. Don't worry about it, no one will ever know if you don't tell them.

Is this outfit too young for me? Naaaah. Well, maybe. But I don't care, I'll wear it anyway 'cause I love it. Susan Sarandon would SO wear this outfit. Wow... you sure do worry a lot about age appropriateness, especially when you have the gall to tell everyone else not to. You worry too much. Nobody listens to you anyway, so why make yourself crazy? Yeah, but I don't want to LOOK crazy.

No. This is cute, and even if it is too young, it works.

It works ... what does that even mean? You heard it all the way through art school in every critique you ever sat through, and used it yourself. A lot. It's sort of like the French je ne sais quoi. It's that indefinable thing about something that you like. Not completely indefinable ... might be the whole outfit brings a vague pleasant memory, or you loved James Dean and Joan Jett and they always wore a motorcycle jacket, or that the color peach really flatters near your face. Or that floral print jeans just feel modern to you. Too trivial to say, or even think very hard about, so you just say "It works."  Huh.

Actually, it's that the jacket keeps the flower-dy jeans from looking too sweet. As do the booties. How can anything called a bootie not be sweet? Glad I found this coral (peach?) t-shirt in last year's stuff. The length works, and covers the old tummy just fine.

Speaking of covering the tummy, it's almost time to get out the put away the dark Spanx tights. I'm gonna miss them. But that means it time to bring out the Spanx long-panty things! Yeaaaay. I do not get those women who go on about why they don't need them, would NEVER wear them. Yeah, well, maybe not. Lucky them. Or maybe they should wear them, but just haven't figured it out! Ha! They probably are too young to remember how awful real girdles were. Nope, I love me some Spanx. Sleek and comfy. They make it possible to wear dresses in insane heat. They wick, they don't make you sweat more! And they're not so hard to get into. Only one or two hits on the asthma inhaler, and you've got 'um on.

Why doesn't someone invent a wee, tiny little panty that controls the tummy and eliminates VPL? Like a control top thong. Maybe not.

Speaking of things not so useful, that "Leibster Award" didn't amount to many hits. Many real hits, that is. I did start to get a whole lot of link-spam from the always charming "Anonymous". Gotta put the old "Prove You're not a Robot" thing back on. Anyway, it's not the number of hits, its the fun comments. And the answers to the questions. Maybe we could invent a variation on the Liebster by just sending around only a set of style questions. Call it "Style Tag for Nosy People", and play it like real tag.
Nope ... just what we need is another techno-annoyance in the form of chain letters. Better not.

Speaking of "better not" ... isn't there some chocolate still hidden in the back of the pantry?"

    1. Since this is the first and last time my name is likely to be found in the same sentence as that of James Joyce, I have to bask in it for a second! FYI, there wasn't any chocolate left when I got there. Sad.
So glad you liked my drawing! Thanks again for all, Patti.

  2. I have flowery trousers and I do love them - I also am finding off late that I too am worrying about age appropriateness, despite always telling everyone else not to - it's a very recent thing and I'm not sure what has brought it on, and I am I'm glad you've said it happens to you too - I'm trying to shut the voice up. I might do it by taking your advice about pairing a biker with my floral trousers - it's a good tip!
I was interested to read on one of your comments on my post that you trained in fine art as a painter - is this the reason why you paint these drawings of yourself for your outfit posts? Or are you camera shy?

    1. I think this self-checking about age is a good thing. The reality is that some stuff just doesn't look good on most older women. The worst thing about the perception of dressing too young is that it indicates a lack of self-esteem ...or too much self-esteem. One of those. Both should be avoided. ( You can worry about this more when you actually start getting older. You are still very young, and shouldn't give it a second thought. It happens to me because I AM old.)

Regarding the drawings ... kind of, to both guesses. I haven't done any drawing in a long time (decades!) and I am so wowed by the technology that it seems like a good time, and my blog seems a good place to play. It's not like I have to submit my work to an art director for approval. I'm the art director now! I love that.
And I admit to not being happy about how I look in photos. I like the way I look in the mirror, though, so my drawings reflect more of that, I think. Mostly, it's just fun!
I really appreciate the interest. Thanks for asking.

  3. OMG. I'm running out of breath keeping up with you! All good, mind you. I happen to love the floral jeans although I don't own any. That might have to change.

  4. Control top thongs...that is soooo funny, and icky at the same time.

As I type, I look down at my floral jeans and assure them they will never become too young for me. I love your look, edged up a bit with the jacket; it je ne sais quois...works, that's it.

Now go get yourself that piece of chocolate. Or banana?

  5. One, cute outfit and definitely too fun not to wear. Two, love the drawing again. Three, I'm not going to lie, I was pretty happy when I hi two hundred GFC followers because I could no longer be nominated for a Leibster Award. It was so flattering, but it's silly when you begin to get nominated so frequently. I'm sure this won't be the last one you get. :)

  6. Jan! This is SO awesome. Your stream of consciousness post could be channeling my ever blabbering brain!

I think that your outfit is perfect. If you have any qualms about biker jackets being age appropriate then read the following posts. They certainly calmed my qualms.

    http://amidprivilege.com/2013/02/middleaged-ladies-wear-biker-jackets/

    http://materfamiliasknits.blogspot.ca/2010/09/motorcycle-mania-older-women-and.html

By the way, thank you so much for your thoughtful response to my online agoninzing about time management. I needed to hear every word of that. My perfectionist tendencies trip me up regularly. Your response was a needed reminder that authenticity is always better than perfection, which is illusive at best.

Your reminder about stasis made me catch my breath. You are absolutely right! All that I can do is try my best each day. Tonight that meant helping my daughter with a paper for school instead of blogging. It was time well invested. But I couldn't go to bed without thanking you for reminding me that I am perfect in my imperfections and to be accepting, not judgmental, of myself.

    1. Nah ... the jacket wasn't an issue with Monkey. Thank you for the links, though! I've always thought the right one can make a woman look more feminine rather than less. Monkey was concerned with the medium sized pink flowers on my thighs! But so far, so good.
I'm so glad I had something of use to say! Time management is always an issue ... the drawings take a lot of time, and if I want to come out and play on Mondays, I battle for time with the weekend hours at the restaurant my Huz and I own. It's always crazy, and I know I'll never find real balance in this situation. It's fun and I usually get it all done, but often something has to give.
Here's to getting to the fun part every day!

  7. I'm totally stealing your Monkey Mind phrase mainly because I can't blame it on Spring I think it happened when I turned 50, but it's a perfect analogy and I love it!
Now, can I also steal or borrow the outfit too? You are not and will never be too old for those flower-dy jeans. I just read another article on age approriate dressing that said my age should NOT wear ripped boyfriend jeans. Well, I LOVE my boyfriend jeans and plan to wear them whenever and wherever I choose. Really at our age who cares? And the spanx, I'm still laughing, probably because I'm one of those who have not tried them and most likely should.
Thanks for making me laugh tonight throughout your entire blog post, your mind must work on highspeed. Simply AMAZING!

    1. So glad you got a chuckle. Yes, probably not just Spring for me either. Honestly, it's almost always not enough sleep the night before. I've seen you wear your boyfriend jeans ... and yes (!) they work for you perfectly. It's the totally grown-up styling you apply. You're so good at that.
When you ask, "Who cares at our age?" I know you mean it rhetorically, but I really do care. But only so far as my own best instincts dictate ... Monkey Mind is sometimes just part of it.
Now, if I can just get enough sleep tonight ...
Thanks so much for stopping by, Trina. I appreciate it.

  8. Thank you for sharing that swing through the jungle of your thoughts, Jan! It sounds very familiar, the ongoing jabbering of an internal voice. Wittling, it's called here. Wittering, if you say it out loud.
The outfit looks great, love the motorbike jacket with the floral jeans. I am surprised to hear you wittle about age-appropriateness. Surely the defining factor is whether you look and feel good in what you wear, regardless of age, and you are looking GOOD!
Another vote for Spanx (or in my case, a cheaper alternative) over here, I love them!
Now get some chocolate, you've earned it with all that thinking! xxxxxx

Yes, I wittle. (Great word ... I'll use it forever! Thanks!)
And yes, I like my jeans, and have great plans for them this summer. The pleasure of wearing them will help relieve the abject misery of our heat and humidity. I just know it.
But tragically, the chocolate was gone.
      But the ice cream wasn't!
      Have a great upcoming weekend.

  10. It's not fair that someone should be so talented with both words and drawing. Jealous admiration. Your outfit is totally age appropriate, whatever that means. My gauge for that is if you feel comfortable in it, then trust your instincts.

Any post that combines Spanx + chocolate = perfection.

    1. What a nice thing to say, Alison! I'm so glad you have fun with my drawings and my often silly posts. The admiration is mutual.

I have way too many "what was I thinking" moments and regrettable outfits. I probably need to at least self-check when the red flags pop up!
In my case, too much chocolate = Spanx. Perfection? Not so much.
Thanks for reading, and especially for your own very fun writing!

  11. Yeah, I agree with the others. Forget about that age appropriate crap. Age appropriate to whom? Who cares anyway? If you like it and it makes you feel good, that's it. My mind chatter, though is not am I too old, but does that make me look too fat? So there you go, there's always something to chatter on about. I guess because its obvious that I'm old and I can't do anything about it. I'm still in some sort of denial about the fatness, probably because I could do something about it if I really committed to a lifestyle change.

Meanwhile, I enjoy your drawings of self. And I especially wanted to give you a shout out for participating in Style Imitating Art! I had missed the last one for the first time too. Hope you continue. Wish more people would play along...

    1. Yup ... I was just fortunate that the Monkey didn't go to the "do they make me look fat" place. Happens, believe me.

So glad you are enjoying the drawings. I'm doing something a bit more "mid-road" for the SIA this week ... and hope you can play. Thanks so much for helping me find it! The possibilities are wonderful.

  13. My monkey mind is so active today that I can't remember what I wanted to write here. It's off swinging on other mental vines. I thought that expression was brilliant by the way. "Mental Vines"... Of course, as I can't find my glasses, I misread it the first time. I thought it said "Metal Wines". Ooooh! If Joan Jett had a vineyard she could call it "Metal Wines". Though I wouldn't consider Joan Jett's music to be metal. Not exactly. I don't know what genre I'd classify it in....

Yep. There's a lot of monkey mind going around this week.
