Just Showing Up

"80 percent of success is showing up."

This wisdom is attributed to Woody Allen and that's how he remembers saying it, although he's often credited with saying "80 percent of life is showing up." And whether it's applied to life or success, there are a lot of variations on the idea:

"Showing up is not all of life - but it counts for a lot."
--Hillary Clinton

"Most of life is showing up. You do the best you can, which varies from day to day."
--Regina Brett

( I include this personal snarky-fun favorite that I apply politically, although I'd certainly never apply it to our blogging process... )
"Showing up every day isn't enough. There are a lot of guys who show up every day who shouldn't have showed up at all."
--James Caan

However, I would absolutely apply this next very perceptive variation to style/fashion bloggers of all ages, especially those over 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and beyond;

"Vulnerability is about showing up and being seen. It's tough to do that when we're terrified about what people might see or think."
--Brene Brown

This post is dedicated to the always fabulous Patti and her constantly evolving blog Not Dead Yet Style, where she offers us a safe space to show up at her biweekly Visible Monday link-up. She sets the tone with her own welcoming and kind comments, and her openness to all kinds of inspiration. By devoting her time and energy to this project, she has given us all a place to say our say, show off our best, pose questions, provoke thought and give and receive encouragement. Here at Patti's, we can meet a grand diversity of invariably interesting women. To a woman, we are malcontents about staying in the cultural, social and political backwaters to which the traditional powers of our society have always been all too happy to relegate us as we age. Visible Monday is a great venue that plays its part in a needed, positive social evolution. Patti's efforts change lives. Because of Patti, I now have more than a passing acquaintance with women all over the world, and they have each become vital elements of inspiration and information in my life that I could have not imagined even 10 years ago. This is a special thank you for all your devotion to Visible Monday, Patti. My life is so much better because of your project, and I know I'm not alone in this.
I hope you never doubt its value.

So, even though I'm pretty much just showing up this week, dressed in yet another iteration of my blazer, skinnies and heels uniform, I'm glad and honored to be with the rest of you who bother to get it together and show up and show out just a little or a lot.

We rock. All of us. And especially Patti.

It was drizzly and chilly when this was taken, and all my outfit plans were reassigned to a another, nicer Sunday.   (Waaa.) Right after this was taken, I went back inside to grab my raincoat and ran off to the Big City with Dan.  The outfit is remarkable only because of my color defiance of the crappy gray skies.  I wore a few brights in my silky-ish Asian-inspired tunic by Kenneth Cole.  And the pumps are Vince Camuto.  I figured if my plans for wearing cute sandals was weather squashed, I'd at least stomp through the puddles in a cool but closed-toe shoe with some character.  I drop these brand names because, although it must seem so, not everything I wear is from Target.  Most, I admit, but not all.

Just sayin'.

  1. +1 on your praises for Patti's Visible Monday! I absolutely believe that she fosters courage in all of us by giving us a place to "show up" to.
You look wonderful, Jan, no apologies needed for such a lovely outfit that is quite remarkable in it's chicness. It's Spring for grownups, and I like it very much!

  2. Really beautiful outfit, Jan!
I love Patti's blog more as time goes by. The older I get, the more I realize how easy it is to slowly disappear from view (whether by choice or not) and Patti's blog is a perfect reminder to stop that. She does some amazing things on her blog.

  3. You are so right about Patti and her Visible Monday project. I am new to participating but have been quietly lurking for awhile. I am particularly pondering the theme of showing up today as a friend who was supposed to visit and for whom I have prepared has made no contact with me whatsoever at this point. It frustrates me when people do that. Grrr!
Love your weather defying shoes and I hope you are stomping gloriously through those puddles.

Ah Jan, thank you so much. I am choked up, and full of gratitude for your remarks. We are all continuing to "show up", and that does count for a lot, doesn't it? And, you look chic and lovely as ever, and keep wearing those heels (for me, who can't!). You're a Visible Beauty.

  9. What a fine tribute to our Patti, she's been like a virtual matchmaker forging friendships across the net with women we'd never have met otherwise. I always try and check in before bed on a Monday just to see whether you've posted and I've timed it just right.
Boo to grey skies - same here! Hope those sassy red shoes bring out the sunshine. Have a great week! xxxx

  10. You are so right about Patti! What a stirring and heartfelt ode, which is well and truly deserved. I love linking up and catching up with what people are wearing - especially those in my age bracket and above :) It does make me feel included!

Love the pops of colour in this outfit - you always have such great shoes! I salute your use of colour in gray skies - I'm usually reaching for the layers of black in such weather!

  11. Perfectly put prose about Patti. I couldn't agree more about the impact she has had on me, my blogging, dressing, etc., etc. Will you be my ghost-writer? You do look hot to trot with those red stilettos that you call pumps. You go girl.

Lovely thoughtful post and a wonderful tribute to Patti. There are so many perks to blogging, making friends, gaining confidence, figuring out your style to name a few. I've loved Visible Monday from the start. It's got such a good idea behind it. And I like that no matter our age, we've all got a place here in the blogworld. I missed your kind comments when I took a blogging break and I had you on my mind since I started back. And I love those bright colors for a rainy day...excellent choice! 21. Haha.. I laughed over your last lines.. Funny!
Your outfit is ace (is that a right expression?), meaning I love it. You describe it as a uniform, but we just see different outfits all the time. Same happened with my coated skinnies. I keep showing them over and over again (and worrying about that). One reader thought she had never seen them before while she had commented on them four times.. Just saying, we readers, need the variety and mixing and matching just as much as new clothes.
As for Patti... her initiative has grown so much, which proves there is a need for it. Saying a big thank you to Patti.
    Greetje
Fantastic shoes! Fantastic tunic. You can send them to me if you get bored with them. Oh no, on second thought, don't send the tunic. It would show too much of my wrinkled skin. Have you noticed I wear my tops quite high near my face? That is why. That is life. I deal with it.

Hi Jan - I finished The Thoughtful Dresser and wanted to know who I should be sending the book to next. Please send the name/address to me at happinessatmidlife@gmail.com.

Thank you for sharing the book - it was an interesting read. Not a book I would've picked up normally and now I will need to do some research and see Christian Dior's first collection.

  23. Yes, Patti does a fabulous job of hosting Visible Monday; she offers space on her blog and her time so generously, going around to visit and comment on every single participant (I wish I could say that every participant returns the courtesy, but they don't seem too... Yep, I get cross about that!)
Oh look at you in your Jan uniform! I love it! It's you, it's chic, it suits you perfectly, and the splashes of red/orange are delightful. Jan and Dan in the Big City - hope you kids had fun! xxx

And thank you, Jan, for expressing your gratitude in such a touching, beautiful way, which I am sure so many of us feel. You are such a talented writer!

  46. Thanks, V. Glad you agree. I often feel the isolation here, and I look forward to Vis Mon a lot. Black: I was going for black (out of a sense of defeat) but pulled out the top and shoes at the last minute, just 'cause I NEEDED and WANTED a little, tiny bit of spring.

    So I made one!

  47. They're not pumps? Who knew? But I like them even though I think the color at the bottom of my look sort of overwhelms and makes me look "teetery." Thanks, though, and I'm glad you liked my Patti-party. VM is sometimes the best thing of my week! I wouldn't have met people like you without her, and you've helped me see sewing as a completely creative endeavor rather than a household skill. I'll never design as independenly as you, but I can assert some creative control of my big-boxy wardrobe even with patterns!

You don't need a ghost-writer! Your posts are always fascinating!

    ReplyDelete
  48. So sweet of you Jean ... it's nothing new, that outfit, but I'm glad it worth a showing. Just wear your pointies with your boho ... takes boho to a "sharper" level, I'll bet! This year with all the pointy toed flats and mid-heels you ought to have a blast with changing up your look. Not that it needs it, but it seems like a natural evolution to me! Of course you can walk in them ... just one foot in front of the other, then repeat!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Glad you agree with me about the Power of Patti. She's an ace, and she's helped introduce so many of us. What a nice thing to do to assign me those virtues, Maricel, but I can't claim them. Patti's influence keeps me on the sweet and low, otherwise I'm pretty much a garden variety cow. I need structure! Seriously, thanks so much for reading and enjoying!

  50. Love it Jan! Since I can rarely bother to show up at all, it was a nice reminder to pick myself up and get back to it! ;o) You look amazing, and you could wear that blazer every day and I would still love it.

  80. Thank you again, kiddo. Am more than happy to adopt you. I'm so grateful for the thought, and the instant blog topic for next week! Such a great idea, and right up my alley. You, of course, just rock the joint! Always.

  81. Dan, darling, you would love Patti's get together. She opens up her blog space for us on alternate Mondays (the next will be on April 21st) and we just post a thumbnail from our current blog and a link to it (there's a tool, right on the page that is very easy to use ... just a couple of clicks and you're done.)

Here's a link to last week's (closed) Visible Monday. You can click on any of the thumbnails and go right to that lady's blog.

Next Sunday evening 4/20 (Eastern time-zone, here in the US) Patti will post and open the Visible Monday link-up. Find it here after she posts it:

From then until late Tuesday night sometime, you can add your post. She's appreciate it if we all put a link somewhere on our blogs to hers. Nice too, to drop her a comment about her outfit! Easy! And so much fun ... I've met dozens of great women from all over the world! You should be right at home.

Thank you so much for your kind remarks! I don't do a huge number of pictures, and I am so flattered that you take the time to read my blog thoroughly! I don't even speak a second language, and I'm always thrilled when you have enjoyed what I write.

Hope to see you at Visible Monday, Dan!

  82. Thanks, Kezzie! Her efforts have meant so much to me. So glad you got a kick out of my blog, and liked the outfit.

You said: "You look neat and daddy and (...)" What does "daddy" mean? A typo of "dandy" or is it some cool UK slang I need to know? I learn a lot from Vix and Curtise ... always going to look words up in urban/slang dictionaries!

  83. Me either. Patti is responsible for a lot of happy hours for me. And now that I've met Trina (see my 4/15 post for that!) she's touched my real life. Pretty isolated here, and I'm in touch with women world wide via her link-up.
Thank you, Kim, for your astonishing compliments ... my taste is often questionable. I post a lot of it ( stupidly, sometimes !) to run it up the flagpole, as it were. Glad you like it, though. That means lots to me! And I do try to entertain, so I'm glad that works sometimes as well! You rock. I just love how you handle the "boobage" ... you're my role model there!

  84. Isn't she just!? I'm so far behind ... but because I've listed my favorite blogs to read in order of most recently updated, I can actually see that I need to go read a new one of yours! I hope to not miss so many as I usual do! Glad you liked my Patti-party. Also glad you liked my uniform ... you are another that varies a theme really well. You get it! And it's going to be so hot here soon that I won't be able to wear my blazers at all, so I'm focused on them!
    So glad you're back.

  85. Thank you, Angie! Patti has just made my life so much better on a couple of levels. Glad you liked my shoes. They are comfortable and work pretty hard visually, don't they?

  86. I hope she pops by to see how many people echo my thanks. She really has provided a much improved social life for me. I live in a very rural area, and don't have a huge number of friends here. She's a lifesaver. Thanks for stopping by, Rachel!

  87. I've been popping by since Monday, but haven't been able to find any links to it. Is it too late?

  88. Hmmmm. Rats. It closes late on Tuesday night, but there's another on May 5th. She opens it Sunday night. Here's the direct link for the current one, followed by Patti's home page link.

It's rolled on to her more recent posts, but if you bookmark this second one, you'll see the VM show up after 5:00 on Sunday night. There's always a link on my page, but I'm often late to the party on Monday night or even Tuesday pm.

Let me if you can't find it ... we'd love to see you there. It was pretty big this time, over 100 participating. Lots to see and think about.
