The Really Good Hair Day ... (which you won't get to see)

A Good Hair Day is one of my favorite trivial but very happy experiences. It isn't world peace, or enlightenment, or the practice of committing random acts of kindness, but it is a special event nonetheless. There is definitely a shallow end to the pool that is my life, and I'm not ashamed to admit I play there as often as I can. It's just nice to be able to savor the sweet surprises that can make all the difference.

On Saturday morning, I did my tired husband a solid and drove to the big city to pick up some additional important items we needed for our pre-St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage feast that we threw at the restaurant this weekend. If we need to make an unscheduled trip, he usually goes in early before work without me, because I hate Sam's Club on Saturday mornings. It's Amateur Night, all day long on Saturdays. Recreational shoppers clog the isles, and everywhere I need to be is occupied with a cart dispensing food samples of heat-and-eat pizza bites or the newest flavor of microwaveable chicken strips. These carts are usually surrounded by large families who are feeding everyone lunch by grazing from cart to cart to cart. Getting what I need to get done in a short time without accidentally cart-crunching someone's errant child or granny is my goal.

I'd colored my hair the day before and didn't hate how my hair looked when I went out the door.

An hour later, as I maneuvered my cart in a civil but politely determined way toward the frozen fish aisle, an older couple about my age passed me going the other way. The pleasant looking man caught my eye, pointed at my head and said "Beautiful hair!" as they passed. I stammered out a surprised thanks. His wife shot him a filthy look and grabbed his arm possessively. ( I'm pretty sure I would have done the same if Dan had said that to a strange women.)

"Cool," I thought, feeling a little more cheerful about the whole trip. I got the fish and headed to the meat case to start digging through the big, uncut ribeye pieces to get the best one. One of the regular meat cutters popped out of his glassed-in work area, glamorous in his white shower cap and lightly blood-stained apron to say hello.
"Have you cut your hair since the last time you were in? It looks really good," said he.
"Thank you!" said I, grinning from ear to ear.

I finished the shopping, feeling pretty darned good about my trip to Sam's. I checked out, and at the door, the dour-faced guy who checks shoppers receipts against the contents of their cart gave me a chaste little hug, saying, " There's my favorite red-head! You look really nice today." Very non-mashy, but sweetly sincere.

Sadly, I didn't have the presence of mind to even shoot a selfie. Might have been useful to try to duplicate what was clearly a successful look. In the photo below, taken the next day, I'm back to my ordinary old hair. No raves from the masses, but Dan said he liked it. That's the only opinion besides mine that really counts, of course.

Still, it was nice to be out in public on what turned out to be one of those Really Good Hair Days.
Shallow? Definitely.
Satisfying? Oh, yes.

This is me trying for a spring transitional outfit, demonstrating the folly of trying to dress for the weather you wish you had instead of the weather you have. It was freaking cold, and I ended up with a coat thrown over the whole thing. Me, being optimistic!

Everyone loves a red head! We all deserve a day where people take notice!!!! Love the nod to Spring in your outfit and wish Mother Nature would tell winter to behave and let go!

  3. "Walking on sunshine", sings me. Three compliments, one day, one store no less! Who cares if the weather says freezing! You are bringing sunshine all the way! Love that bag!!!

Okay, I have now six pairs of shoes that I am test driving, LOL. I'm pretty sure you're right, I am a 5.5. Still have to get a pro fit though. I'm really surprised at how many stores are now stocking small shoe sizes! It's fun!

  4. How fun to get a bunch of compliments! That can make even Sam's Club fun! Love your bag in this pic!

  5. Your hair always looks stupendous. How nice to get so much (deserved) attention.
Love that huge shopping bag! Yesterday's weather was the same here, I'm glad I had a spare coat in the van to throw on or I'd have frozen.

  6. Oh, Jan! What wit! What voice! "Amateur Hour" indeed! I applaud you for even braving bog box stores; I loathe them. Even my kids know that after a round of Costco shopping , Mommy needs to decompress by going to Target.

And of course you'd get compliments. I think you're fooling yourself. It wasn't just a good hair day. It was you! :)

  8. I hate, hate, hate grocery stores after 4pm and on weekends. I shop with purpose GTF out of my way LOL.
Sweetheart, I just don't see the "bad hair". I should look half as good on my best day as you on your worst. You're a knockout; deal with it ;-)

  9. You always looks gorgeous to me and you hair looks great! I can't even imagine how it could get better than that. My hair is usually a disaster because I neglect it. It's perfectly healthy since neglect also involves no processing or heat treatments. I am always changing my mind about the length and style I want so basically I am always just growing out my hair a little or getting it all hacked off.
This was a fun post to read. Thank you for writing and sharing it!

  10. Your hair always looks pretty bloody fabulous to me, Jan! Of course you got compliments, they are no more than you deserve. The shopping trip sounds a bit vile, but the compliments made up for it, so balance is restored. Love the big shopping bag, you look wonderful! xxx

  11. Haha! I like lounging in shallow end of my life for as long as possible when I can too. Loved this post - it made me grin. Every woman knows that a truly good hair day is like gold dust and should be savoured while it lasts! Your hair always looks great so it must have looked super fab!
The salmon pink top looks lovely on you and those are great accessories (like the gold bling and the bag!)

  12. Well hey that's good for the soul, some sincere complements from strangers. Those are the best you know, no strings attached. You do look great! I think blogging helps refine one's style and gives confidence to us. I would have never guessed this when I started. It feels good to me to be part of the group of great looking 40+ women worldwide that have "it" going on!

  14. Nothing shallow about receiving complements from strangers. This is a good reminder to compliment strangers when you mean it - it could really make their day and who knows what kind of day they are having. Personally I think your hair looks great and really like how you rolled your sleeves.

I don't have good hair day, I have good hair hour. I have this problematic, flat, thinning (thanks to Dubai overly hard water) hair. It is nice only an hour or so after washing and blow drying and then it'll psssssss... deflate. Pre Dubai I used to have full head of hair that everytime I visited the salon, the girl would 'complain' that she had to work hard blow drying my hair. Anyway, you are blessed with good head of hair, full and from here I can say healthy too. I am 44 and already left with half of what I used to have, can you imagine me in 10 years?

  17. Awesome day. I don't care how shallow it may seem...compliments from random strangers are ALWAYS the best. And you deserve every one of them. You are looking exceptional, as always. I have been toying with a hair color change for a while now, perhaps I too will go red?! LOL

Even without a selfie, I really enjoyed your Sam's Club story for a number of reasons. Most of us can relate to feeling not-so-put-together sometimes and then others react positively to us! What a wonderful feeling! It's like that with my artwork sometimes...my least favorite piece will sell first, or get a ton of attention! By the way, I didn't think of your story as shallow at all.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Dang, I'm going to start hanging out at Sam's Club more often! :) Totally deserved compliments. You are one beautiful woman. Most women would die for your hair alone...and then those eyes. I do love your bright coral for spring. It's blazer weather for sure but that's ok. We southern women don't get many blazer days.

  21. Congrats' dear Jan! A perfect hair day should be marked in the calender. Although I always find your hair style amazing and perfectly fitting, I know that hair is a special thing. Only the owner knows when it fits right, nobody else, not matter what they say.
Not only your hair is pretty, your look is also gorgeous. I love that light pink shirt.

  36. Thanks, Tracy, for your sweet comments! I do have to note that not everyone loves a red head. I have an ex that isn't my biggest fan, and I think I've spoiled it for the rest of the redheads he'll ever meet. ( Good.)

  39. Thank you, Vix! Glad you think so. It was nice to hear nice things from almost strangers!
I like big totes, but am learning to tuck in a clutch with the basics ... often easier than hauling everything I own around in one bag all day. Or almost everything I own!
I wish you some nice weathers soon ... you look like such a tropical flower. We're getting rain and warmer evenings, which means grass, which means happier horses, which means a happier me!

  40. Glad you enjoyed it, Maricel. Thank you. We gave up on the local, crappy distributors and buy everything we need at the restaurant ourselves. Here, that means Sam's Club. We'd love a Costco here, but it's Walton-WalMart territory here and they aren't allowed. I have to be plied with dinner and wine after a trip there, usually. At least the wine part.
Nah. It was the fresh color. Kind of you to say, though!

  49. Didn't say it was "bad hair" ... just "ordinary old hair" ... but that's a sweet thing to say, Alicia. Thank you, adorable girl. You are a darling exaggerator, but I'd rather have flattering comments about the the things I don't mind about myself than to have my faults exaggerated. Much rather!
Grocery stores for us are like parts stores for motorheads. Guess that would make us foodheads!

    ReplyDelete
  50. That's so kind of you, Shawna! I really love a pixie, but the young lady who cuts my hair has been kind enough to steer me away from one. (Actually, she refuses to do it. Kindly but firmly.) It takes pretty features for them to look best, and I always overestimate my looks!
I think you look charming in your cut ... very modern and flattering. It does, sometimes, take some tweaking to get it right.

    ReplyDelete
  51. And you are the kindest woman alive, Curtise! The shopping was just another day in the restaurant industry. Dan and I make a game of finding the quickest route to all the stuff we need ... they just did a reset of EVERYTHING in the store, and the aisles of this stadium sized-store were full of angry, lost people.
    As always, thanks for all!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm always tickled when my posts entertain, V. Thank you. I'm always disappointed that my colors don't come out better on my jewelry ... the north light on our front porch is always so cold. It was all rose-gold colored and looked really pretty with the coral top and navy blazer, and it really made the otherwise casual outfit a lot more polished, I thought. It didn't read well, I know. I will learn to get that right some day.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thanks so much, JT. Always neat when you stop by!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm so glad you mentioned that. I try very hard to make sure that I compliment strangers when the opportunity arises. Especially older women. Even if it's just admiration of jewelry or their hair, or a pretty bag ... so often they are just delighted. Even older gentlemen, especially when it looks like they've made a special effort to look dapper. That should never go unnoticed, and especially, it shouldn't go unmentioned!
    Thank you, Alice!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hey, Jill! So kind of you. As I was saying to Veshoevius, I'm sorry that my photo colors don't read well. The blazer is navy (but very dark navy) and my metals pink gold toned. Really makes a difference when they don't read right! It's officially spring, but still chilly!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Awwh. I know a little of what you mean. I've admired you sleek hair, and have always thought it looks very elegant on you, but I get how crazy it can make you crazy, especially the thinning. You do a great job of making the best of what you have! My hair sags in the summer humidity, and I've been using minoxidil for androgenic alopecia ( genetic bald spots) for several years. SO glad its a pretty safe treatment, and it works well. Color helps too. My problem is just associated with aging. Have you checked with your doctor?
Thank you for your very kind comments!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm betting you won't, but I've always thought you had the best hair! Great cut and color.
Thanks for stopping by with nice things to say ... always a pleasure!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thank you, Dawn, for reading and liking my post. By the way, the young woman who cuts my hair was all cracked up over the fact that I knew what a selfie is! The young chronically underestimate us old ladies. You won't experience it for at least a couple of decades yet!

  59. It's certainly a diverse audience at Sam's. I've even seen tourists having their pictures taken with the sample-vendors.
Such nice things for you to say! Too kind, Alison. But thank you ... I won't give you a chance to take them back.
Blazers ... yes! I wear them a lot more during the winter now as it no longer looks strange to throw on an overcoat over the blazer. A trend I heartily approve of! But it will be too hot very soon, and I'll miss them a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Yup! You are so right, and we reds get our share of comments. I'm tickled that you read and replied to my very long post ... I know they make you crazy. But I'm as interested in what people think about what they wear as what they wear, and frankly, I'm a much better writer than a self-stylist. Not saying much, that!
So glad you stopped by, kid! You are welcome, always.

    ReplyDelete
  61. They are the best, aren't they. As I was saying to Alice ... I try hard to let other women, particularly older ones, know when they're looking special. Even just a little thing, like a pretty pin or nice bag. We should make a movement of it. Hey, there's a blog post there!
Thanks, Ann, as always for saying such encouraging things. I don't know about having it going on, but I know blogging keeps me more aware of what I put on and how I think about what I wear.

Really lovely though what all those people said. btw, that blazer shirt and jeans combo is a killer! Need to restyle that asap!! Thx also for your thoughtful comment on my apricot colored outfit. I will take your advice seriously - right now looking for a good sun lotion with even higher SPF for the upcoming months! Already got enough freckles going!

  88. That is a fun day and a fun story! :) I am glad that you share such lighthearted stories with us. You always look AMAZING, Jan! I bet half of the times people are just too shy or self-conscious to tell you that. That is one of the reasons I love medieval festivals, by the way. Somehow people are much more relaxed and playful, and flirtation is in the air. I miss it being from Russia. We are still very old-fashioned in that way over there. :) You'd be showered with compliments to your gorgeous hair and everything else in Russia. :) At least, in my circles. I am not so sure about stores. :)
