B-Day, 2014 !

With a little luck, by this coming Friday afternoon, January 31st, and just after 1:46 PM, I will have completed my 63rd trip around the sun and will commence my 64th. And every year, no matter how glad, sad or mad I might feel when I wake up on my birthday, I remember that I'm celebrating a privilege not every one I have loved still gets to experience. That's true every morning, but there's something about a birthday that makes the thought more poignant. Along with that thought, there's a sense of urgency to get up and go do something productive and meaningful. It's a personal New Year and is always about renewal and fresh starts. Not bad ideas to celebrate. No matter how many you have under your belt, it sure beats the alternative. (And the longer you live, the more platitudes you'll have to use on the day. Collect all you can.)

And once again, just as I wrote it as a 63-year-old, my blog will be about my adventures and misadventures with personal style. At this age, I should have some pearls of wisdom on the subject. You'd think so, wouldn't you? But no. I still don't have it all figured out.  Just lots of adamant opinions, some personal style puzzles and projects, minor and major shopping triumphs and frustrations, and photos documenting all of the above. And you can surely count on my review of and spoils from at least one designer collaboration with Target.  And shoes.  Always shoes.
I hope that all of you who are regular readers enjoyed what I had to say this year.

So, I really just have this one question today.

Will you still read me, when I'm 64?

(With sincerest apologies to Lennon and McCartney.)

I finally found the navy blue blazer I've wanted for the last two years! Nice little win.

(Sandals in January? It was 69 degrees on Sunday.
Today, the high was 31 degrees and high, cutting winds. Fuzzy Uggs today.)

  8. Happy 64 years young Jan! Showering you with the brightest birthday wishes! Affirmative...will still read you when you're 64...but more importantly, will still love you when you're 64! Perfect fit with the blazer; the sleeves are spot on! And the heels...Oh Wow! I'm trying, really I am...

  9. Happy Happy Birthday to you Jill! Do hope you'll be celebrating in style (and then sharing the outfit photos!) and wishing a wonderful year ahead. I certainly will be reading when you're 64 don't you worry about that. You look wonderful here - very French chic in the blazer and breton stripes and I love those high heels! Inspirational! I do hope I will still be wearing stilettos at 64. Like you I'm a shoe lover and love my high heels but I am finding it harder to put up with wearing them for long periods at a time these days (how do you manage?) - but I also dread having to give them up completely.
Anyway hope you have a fabulous birthday xxx

  10. You becha, I'll be reading as long as you'll have me. Happy Birthday! Why not sandals in winter? It's not like you're tromping through the snowy woods in that awesome outfit. Time to celebrate.

  11. Yes I will still read you when you are 64, surprised that I am that you are going to be 64. Really enjoy reading. Have a happy birthday!

  12. You're kidding me!!!!! No way you could be doing 64!! You don't look like it no way near!!
Anyway I will follow you to the Moon, my dear :)
Loving the blazer, I'm a brazer's fan, and navy is such a must have colour.
You look fabulous in your stripped top with that beautiful necklace. Very European chic. (Believe me I know, I'm European)
Happy earlier Birthday!!!!! Hope you'll enjoy your day as much as you can and may the year ahead be full of blessings!
Stilettos... you're brave, I'm having some troubles wearing them :( I'm a high heels woman...
Thank you so much again for linking with Très Chic Style Bits.

  13. Happy birthday for Friday, lovely Jan. Age? Well, it is what it is, can't change it, so we embrace it and we laugh and we revel in our still-being-here-ness and whatever scraps of knowledge we have picked up along the way, right? Opinions, puzzles, triumphs, frustrations; these happen at all ages, and I think you have great personal style and buckets of good sense, humour and wisdom. So yes, if it's OK with you I will be reading and learning and laughing along with you for another year.
Nearly forgot the outfit - soooo chic, the blazer is super-flattering, and as always, Heels of Glory! xxx

Happy Birthday! As someone who lost her father when he was just 42, I have really celebrated every year since I reached that milestone! I am sure you have many pearls of wisdom unrelated to fashion, which is ever evolving ... Love the navy blazer!

  15. Happy birthday! And, as always, you look fabulous!

  16. You do look tres chic for celebrating your soon-to-be birthday and new year. (I always think of the new year starting on my birthday too.) Your shorter hair cut looks really great, don't you think? Yep, I think you've found the one. As one crone to another, I'll still read ya, thinking 'bout my generation...

You are fabulous, ageless and ever so funny, sunny and kind. I wish you all the best the world could offer - health, wealth, more things to shop, more closet space and above all that, LOVE. I cannot believe that, Jan! Here in Germany we do not wish Happy Birthday in advance, so I'll come back for that!

  23. Sixty four no way I thought you were 44..... I have been telling myself the reason you look so kick ass cute is because you are 20 years younger than me. Now what is my excuse??? I am such a fan of your style. Have a fabulous birthday...

  24. Happy pre-Birthday! You look great and you are doing with your fashion choices. Keep it up! The outfit is fab and the hair is beautiful.

  27. NO WAY!!! You look so much younger Jan!!! That's not how 64-year-olds looked when I was a kid - matter of fact, that's not what 64-year-olds look like now either!! I would have guessed 40s.

Yes, we'll be here, looking forward to your fashionable photos and reading your adventures and words of wisdom!!

This outfit is great. You must be so glad you finally found that blue blazer. It is indeed perfect. I was wondering about those sandals.. 69 degrees hey? Then dropping to 31.. Big differences. We have a steady 5 degrees Celcius (you do the maths...). You hair looks great in this picture as well. I washed my hair today and it is much better. Really pleased I copied you.

  31. Ah, now I feel double sad. We could have had a great birthday celebration. Now the weather really owes us, well you, that is. I still trying to get over the fact that you are in your sixties and look like this super young chic just waiting to capture the world. Your vibrant personality and energy has definitely kept you young and beautiful. Your excellent style sense also plays a huge role in that factor as well. I do believe the long wait was worth it because that jacket fits you like a glove, and what a great combo you put together.
Have a wonderful wonderful Birthday. Sure hope Dan is feeling better.

  32. That's what I'm hoping for, Val ... and at least one more! Make it so.
    Thank you,V.

  33. Pleased you like them, Alice. I'm having trouble making my boyfriends look like they should ... to me they're reading as "mom jeans" on me. Gotta work on that. Advise?
    Thanks for all!

  34. Feeling showered, Sue! So kind ... and you got the pun. That's worth a lot, love!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Wow! I'll take that, Karen! Wish it were more true ... from your mouth to the style-fairy's ear! That would be the best gift; the ability to understand and ACHIEVE effortless chic. I need to frame this comment. Thank you, Karen.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oooh! Is Jill having a birthday too? (Sorry, couldn't resist!) Thanks V. I appreciate it. Will, unfortunately, be sashaying around our little restaurant on Friday night, hostessing other women's birthdays (that's actually kind of fun, now that I think of it.) Will make up for it on Sunday night, I hope.

You will undoubtedly wear anything you wish by the time you're 64 ... it's a long time away, and I hope to be around to see it. ( Imagine you in a hologram, strutting your stuff in future high-tech couture! )
It's just habit. And stubbornness. But I did note that a couple of nights wearing a mid-heel did make the higher ones less comfortable the next night. Urk.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Awww, thanks Mel. Seriously, it was so warm I had to shed the jacket! Ass-freezing misery 24 hours lately. I appreciate you so much, lady.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thank you, Maggie! I'll do that, and I appreciate your reading!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yup! 64! It's just a fuzzy photo ... and my round face, big baby features and that I'm proportioned like a 6 year old. Such nice wishes ... you are a kind girlfriend to say those nice things. I will have a great birthday, and will drag it out as long as I can!
You have a great week, dear Seeker!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thank you, Curtise. My numbers have never bothered me. (I do this every year ... on February first, I start telling myself that I'm 65 so it's no big surprise when it arrives. Not kidding. I do this.) I'm going to bake myself a sugar-free dark chocolate cake and enjoy every bit. Dan can have some if he's nice!
Seriously, I never thought I'd make it this far with all my teeth and most of my hair, so it's all good!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thank you, Brittney! Nice to hear it. So kind of you!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks, Pao! We don't have much family left, either one of us, so birthdays are a little bit of an issue this time of the year ... slow for the business after Christmas, so we punt. I'm looking forward to the year.
I am/was/will be a Who fan ... the Doctor fan and a Daltry fan at the same time. Townshend will always be a favorite rock composer and lyricist, in spite of his misogynist tendencies!

  43. What nice birthday wishes! Impressive ... and very kind. I'm thinking that my little kid stature and round face and head make me look younger than I might. So when you find the fountain of youth, I'm right there with you.

  44. I appreciate that a lot, Sandy! Kind of you ... and you have a great day as well.

  54. Nope ... although I'll start telling myself that I'm 65 pretty soon, just so I'll get used to it by next year. Try it ... it really works! Seriously, thank your so much, Dawn. Glad you enjoy the reading. For me, that's more important than outfits, at least most of the time. I just love talking about why we wear what we do!
Hope I told you Happy Belated Birthday as well ... I'm so old I don't remember if I did or not. Anyway, Happy Belated Birthday if I did not!

  61. Yes, me too. But soon! We'll get it together. What nice compliments, Trina ... I love it that you would exaggerate so to make me happy. You have such a kind heart, girlfriend! I appreciate every word. Thank you so much, Know I'll have a great one.
Dan's better, but still sore. Takes longer to get over being stove up when we are ancient! ( He's milking it for all it's worth, but he'll get bored doing that soon, I know! )

  62. Happy Birthday, Jan! As always, you look amazing; put together and tailored on top, nice lines mixed with comfort/pratcicality for the lower half, and sexy footwear. :D

Of course I'll read you this coming year. I'll read your awesome blog posts and musings for as long as you put them on the Internet! Did I read correctly in a recent post that you're petite, too? High-five!

  63. Ok, number 1, I cant believe you are in your 60's!!! What the heck. Happy Birthday and many, many more!

I think you should get a new hair dresser! I did. Back in my 40s I had gone to the same stylist for 10 years. I wanted my hair short and she said,"You wouldn't look good with short hair!" Excuse me? So I fired her and never went back. I did! I told that to my newest stylist and she was very taken back. hahahahaha

  74. Thank you, Aya! Glad you'll hang in with the old ladies!
Yes, petite in the sense that I'm 5' 0 " ... but may soon eat myself out of single digit sizes. Urk.

Hmmm. My jeans in the photo are bfs from Old Navy ... they say "Boyfriend" in 1 inch print around the inside of the back waistband/ But they look like comfy mom jeans ...these may be a thing that I have to avoid. Don't really liked distressed jeans, but might cuff them. That's problematic as well. I'll work on it. I don't mean to look like I habitually opt for the most comfy bottoms. Thanks for the heads up!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Oh, yes. So into my 60s. Not so bad, it seems. Thank you for you sweet wishes! So kind.

You were probably right to fire your stylist ... you look great, and you are looking extrememly sharp. Sadly, though, I think mine is quite right. My big features (kind-speak for coarse) don't work with even the choppiest pixie. I've had it very short, and it was unfortunate. However, she is working on it, and long layers with texture seem to help. She's saving me from myself ... whenever I consider chopping it off anyway, I get that feeling in the pit of my stomach that says "listen up ... you're gonna make a big mistake!"

Hair. It's so important!!!! Thanks for listening to my angst!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thank you, Olga! The big smile just hides my droopy jawline! (I've been told too often that I have Resting Mean Face when I don't remember to grin like a 6 year old in a candy shop.)

I see your vacation pics starting to appear, so will have lots to entertain me. Thanks, too for that. We're all happy to see your lovely rested self back in the cyber-neighborhood!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thank you so much! I'm glad you've enjoyed all, and am glad you liked my choices. I spend half my getting-dressed time trying to not chop myself off at the ankle. I ended up with mom-jeans instead of bfs ... but at least the shoes didn't do too much damage. Fun to wear them on the odd warm day, and just because I wanted to!

  84. Thanks, Debbie! Worked on my birthday proper, and was snowed in yesterday when we would have gone out to dinner, but I intend to celebrate seriously soon. I did, however, eat way too much cake, and will spend the month doing something about it!

  86. Happy belated birthday, Jan! What can I say, you´re the only `girl´ I know who rocks a gorgeous tulle skirt at 62. 89. Aiee! I apologize Jan, I chose my words poorly, then. I meant, as a compliment, that your bottoms always look like something you can move in. To answer the question you left me, I'm a martial artist, which is why I have a bias against tight jeans/trousers/skirts- with my build they always feel like I'm a trussed side of beef. That is why I admired your styling of jeans and slacks!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Oooh, no... No Apology Necessary, Aya. There was something bothering me about this outfit that I just couldn't put my finger on. Definitely should have had on jeans that look more contemporary on me. I don't have a feel for these, and like cardigans, I may be too old to wear them without looking elderly. They do look like mom jeans on me, especially in this outfit. So you innocently pointed out something that I couldn't figure out. I wasn't offended at all. I don't mind very fitted clothing so far as comfort goes. In fact, a close fit helps me manage proportions better. But no offence taken, Aya, and I know none was meant.
Martial arts: I THOUGHT there was something disciplined-looking in your stance, Aya. Excellent girl! Which flavor? Hobby? How long have you studied?

  92. At 63, if you please! And you're right, we still think of ourselves as girls, just old ones. Such nice things to say, Che. So glad you like my hair. It is different for me, and am still learning how to fix it. Thank you so much for the birthday wishes!

  93. Thank you, Judith. Still trying to manage a real-world celebration ... snow, ice, finances, etc. but had a lovely cyber party with all the kind wishes. I especially value yours.

  94. I've been doing Chinese wushu, specifically longfist and straightsword for a total of... jeez, 13.5 years now. That sounds/looks a lot more impressive than it is.
